Large Viking Round Shield “BJÖRN” in Wood – Battle-Ready Design

The round shield “BJÖRN” features a deliberately simple and functional design inspired by the round shields associated with the Viking Age. Rather than elaborate paintings or extensive decorative fittings, the focus is placed on its large shield surface, central steel boss and robust construction.

One of its defining features is its generous size. While many modern reconstructions of historical round shields are comparatively small, “BJÖRN” is dimensioned to more closely reflect historical examples, giving it an imposing and authentically inspired appearance.

The front consists of a dark wooden surface with a domed steel shield boss positioned at the centre. A steel rim runs around the outer edge, reinforcing the robust and understated appearance of the shield.

On the reverse, a strong wooden grip is firmly riveted to the shield. The central section of the grip is wrapped in leather for a secure and comfortable hold. The opening behind the shield boss provides sufficient room for the hand while carrying and controlling the shield.

“BJÖRN” is designed as a battle-ready round shield and is particularly suitable for corresponding historical portrayals and reenactment. Its understated appearance also makes it a fitting addition to Viking Age equipment, living history displays and historical photography, theatre, film and television productions.
