Viking Sword “EDMUND” – 10th-Century Battle-Ready Sword

The Viking sword “EDMUND” is an extensively handcrafted reconstruction of a 10th-century sword whose design is based on archaeological finds from England. It reflects a period when Scandinavian warriors were no longer visiting the British coasts solely for raids, but were increasingly establishing permanent settlements in parts of England.

The blade is forged from high-quality EN45 spring steel and hardened to approximately 48–50 HRC. A pronounced fuller reduces the weight of the blade while contributing to its flexibility. For use as a battle-ready sword, both the cutting edges and the blade tip are blunt and rounded. The striking edge measures approximately 2 mm thick.

The blade has a full-length tang extending through the handle to the pommel, where it is hand-peened. Both the guard and pommel are made from steel. The characteristic five-lobed pommel gives the sword its distinctive Viking Age appearance, while the grip is wrapped in leather for a secure and comfortable hold.

“EDMUND” is classified as SK-B and is specifically designed as a battle-ready version. As with all weapons intended for staged combat, it should still be used in a controlled manner, with appropriate protective equipment and in accordance with the applicable safety rules.

The sword comes complete with a matching wooden scabbard covered in leather. A wooden suspension loop accommodates belts up to approximately 5 cm wide, while an elaborately decorated brass chape provides an attractive finishing detail.

Combining a historically inspired appearance with a battle-ready construction, this sword is well suited to reenactment and historical portrayals as well as stage productions, photography, film and television.

Care Instructions

The EN45 spring steel used for the blade is not stainless and may develop signs of corrosion over time. The blade should therefore be stored dry, cleaned after use and regularly treated with a suitable maintenance oil for steel.
