Viking Round Shield “HATI” with Mánagarm and Sköll – Norse Mythology
The Viking round shield “HATI” combines the classic form of a large round shield with a striking scene from Norse mythology. The painted design centres on the wolves Mánagarm and Sköll and their pursuit of the moon and sun.
Mánagarm, whose name can be translated approximately as “Moon-Hound”, and Sköll belong to the darker imagery of Norse tradition and are associated with the Fenris Wolf. Mánagarm is described as the destroyer of the moon and is said to feed upon the flesh of the dead.
The story reaches its dramatic climax with Ragnarök, when the wolves pursue and ultimately devour the heavenly bodies. This mythical chase of the sun and moon forms the central theme of the shield's painted design, making “HATI” a particularly expressive piece for enthusiasts of Norse mythology.
The round shield is made from sturdy plywood and covered with canvas. This construction provides the base for the large painted design and gives the shield its characteristic appearance.
A steel shield boss is also included. The boss is supplied separately and must be attached to the shield by the customer using the screws provided.
With its mythological design, “HATI” makes a striking addition to Viking and medieval portrayals. It is particularly suitable for reenactment, living history, LARP and costumes as well as a prop for stage, photography, film and television productions or as a decorative collector's piece for enthusiasts of the Viking Age and Norse mythology.
