Hanwei Francisca “CHLOTHAR” – Frankish Throwing Axe by Paul Chen

The Hanwei Francisca “CHLOTHAR” is a historically styled and fully functional reproduction of the famous Frankish throwing axe. The Francisca takes its name from its close association with the Franks, who used this distinctive type of axe both as a throwing weapon and in close combat.

One of its most recognisable features is the elegant and unmistakable shape of the axe head. A raised upper point is combined with a pronounced downward-curving cutting edge. On historical Francisca axes, this characteristic geometry was not merely decorative but formed part of an effective weapon design that could also be used against mail armour.

This Francisca was made by Paul Chen at the Hanwei forge. Its forged axe head is made from carbon steel and features a grey antique finish. The deliberately worn surface gives the axe a rugged historical appearance while emphasising the distinctive profile of the Frankish design.

The hardwood haft also incorporates construction features inspired by historical examples. Its upper section is thickened to help keep the axe head securely seated. The haft additionally curves slightly backwards, following the form of original Francisca axes. This geometry is intended to increase the likelihood of the axe head or cutting edge engaging the target when thrown.

With its forged carbon steel head, characteristically shaped hardwood haft and functional construction, “CHLOTHAR” is particularly appealing to collectors of historical weapons and for Frankish or early medieval portrayals. It also makes a distinctive piece for reenactment, living history, historical presentations, photography, stage, film and television productions.
