Hanwei Viking Sword “TRONDHEIM” – Damascus Sword Based on a Norwegian Find
The Hanwei Viking sword “TRONDHEIM” is an elaborately crafted interpretation of a historical find discovered near Trondheim in Norway. The sword that served as its model dates to approximately the early 9th century, a period when Norwegian Vikings were embarking on raids and expeditions to Britain and Ireland.
One of the most distinctive features of this sword is its elaborate Damascus carbon steel blade. Hanwei combines the striking structure of Damascus steel with a design closely inspired by the historical character of the Trondheim find. The blade, guard and pommel are worked as a unified construction.
The characteristic patterning of the Damascus steel also gives each sword a distinctive appearance. Its visible structure is created through the combination of different steel layers, producing the lively patterns traditionally associated with Damascus blades.

About Damascus Steel
Damascus steel refers to a composite steel made by combining two or more different types of steel. Traditionally, harder high-carbon steel and softer lower-carbon steel could be joined through repeated forge welding and folding.

Higher-carbon steel could contribute hardness, hardenability and edge retention, while softer layers provided additional flexibility and resistance to breakage. The process also produces the characteristic visible patterns for which Damascus blades are particularly well known.
The striking appearance of patterned blades fascinated people during the Middle Ages. Figurative descriptions also appear in Old Norse tradition, where the pattern of a blade could be compared to a bloody worm or a venomous serpent.
