Hanwei Viking Sword “GODFRED DAMASCUS” – Elaborate Replica with 400-Layer Damascus Steel
The Viking sword “GODFRED DAMASCUS” by Paul Chen / Hanwei is named after Godfred Haraldsson, a feared Viking leader of the 9th century. This finely crafted sword draws inspiration from historical originals of the period and pays tribute to the legendary craftsmanship associated with early medieval Nordic smiths.
Its most striking feature is the folded and richly patterned blade made from 400-layer Damascus steel. The blade is inspired by 9th-century originals, while the characteristic Damascus pattern gives each example its own distinctive appearance.
The elaborate design continues throughout the hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and framed by a guard and pommel made from Damascus steel. These components echo the patterned appearance of the blade and create a harmonious overall design. According to the manufacturer, the sword is exceptionally well balanced and displays excellent craftsmanship.
A leather-covered wooden scabbard is included with the sword. Genuine bronze fittings provide decorative accents and reinforce its historical character. The scabbard is also equipped with a matching belt suspension for carrying.
About Damascus Steel
Damascus steel refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. Traditionally, harder high-carbon steel and softer lower-carbon steel can be combined through repeated forge welding and folding.
This technique makes it possible to combine different properties of the steels involved. Higher-carbon steel can contribute hardness, hardenability and edge retention, while softer steel layers can provide additional flexibility and resistance to breakage.
The different layers also create the distinctive visible patterns associated with Damascus steel. Depending on the construction and forging process, a variety of patterns can be produced. This striking appearance contributed to the fascination surrounding patterned blades during the Middle Ages.
With its 400-layer Damascus blade, matching Damascus steel hilt components and elaborately appointed scabbard, “GODFRED DAMASCUS” is particularly appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of high-quality Viking swords. It is also suitable for historical portrayals, reenactment and living history as well as an impressive display piece or equipment for photography, film and stage productions.
