Norman Shield “GUILLAUME” in Wood – Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry

The Norman shield “GUILLAUME” features the characteristic elongated form closely associated with Norman warriors of the 11th century. Its green and yellow decoration takes inspiration from contemporary imagery, including the famous representations found on the Bayeux Tapestry.

The Bayeux Tapestry depicts numerous scenes surrounding the Norman conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Warriors carrying the distinctive elongated shields associated with this period appear throughout these scenes. The shape offered extensive coverage, particularly for mounted warriors, and has become one of the most recognisable elements of Norman military equipment.

“GUILLAUME” is constructed from plywood and covered with canvas. The front has a dark green base decorated with four sweeping yellow sections outlined in red. At the centre is the opening intended for the steel shield boss.

Three fixed leather straps are attached to the reverse. They provide different carrying options, allowing the shield to be held on the arm or carried over the shoulder. Leather-covered padding is also fitted to the back of the shield.

The supplied steel shield boss is not pre-mounted. It must be attached by the customer using the six included screws with decorative heads. Alternatively, suitable rivets or nails of your own may be used for installation.

Thanks to its comparatively lightweight construction, this Norman shield is particularly well suited to reenactment and historical portrayals. “GUILLAUME” also makes an impressive piece for living history, medieval events, costume displays, exhibitions and historical decoration.
