Viking Round Shield “RAVNIR” with Hugin & Munin and Triskele
The Viking round shield “RAVNIR” is a large and elaborately designed wooden shield featuring imagery inspired by Norse mythology. Its front depicts two ravens together with a triskele, creating a striking piece for Viking-inspired equipment and decoration.
The pair of ravens represents Hugin and Munin – also known as Huginn and Muninn – the famous messengers of Odin. In Norse mythology, the ravens fly across Asgard and Midgard before returning to Odin to tell him what they have seen and heard. Ravens are therefore among the motifs most closely associated with the Norse god.
The shield is constructed from plywood approximately 13 mm thick. At its centre is a generously sized steel shield boss, securely attached with four rivets and providing ample room for the hand.
The edge of the round shield is covered with rawhide. Three riveted wooden reinforcement battens are fitted to the reverse for additional stability. The central batten also serves as the hand grip and is wrapped with leather around the shield opening for a more comfortable hold.
Due to its construction, “RAVNIR” is not intended for full-contact combat. It is, however, an impressive accessory for reenactment and LARP as well as Viking and medieval costumes, stage productions, photography, film and television. Its distinctive raven design also makes it an attractive collector's piece, display shield or decorative wall piece.
