Anglo-Saxon Round Shield “WYRM” with Serpent Motif and Futhorc Runes
The round shield “WYRM” combines Anglo-Saxon-inspired decoration with a powerful serpent motif. Its front is dominated by a large intertwined serpent and three runes from the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet known as the Futhorc.
The serpent motif can also be associated with the Norse Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr, also known as the World Serpent. In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr is one of the children of Loki and the giantess Angrboða and, together with Fenrir and Hel, is one of the great adversaries associated with the gods.
According to Norse tradition, the enormous serpent lies in the sea surrounding Midgard and is so vast that it encircles the world while holding its own tail in its mouth. At Ragnarök, Thor and Jörmungandr meet in their final confrontation. Thor kills the serpent with Mjölnir but dies shortly afterwards from its venom.
“WYRM” is constructed from plywood. At the centre is an opening for the included steel shield boss. The boss can be attached using the supplied rivets and provides ample room for the hand. The outer edge of the shield is additionally reinforced with steel.
A sturdy solid-wood hand grip is fitted to the reverse, allowing the round shield to be securely held and carried.
Due to its comparatively light and thin construction, “WYRM” is not intended for full-contact combat. It is well suited as an accessory for Anglo-Saxon or Viking-inspired portrayals, reenactment and LARP as well as costumes, stage productions, photography, film and television. Its striking serpent decoration also makes it an attractive collector's piece, display item or decorative wall shield.
