Viking Round Shield “FENRIR” – Hand-Painted Fenris Wolf and Runes
The Viking round shield “FENRIR” combines a striking motif from Norse mythology with the classic form of a round shield. Made from plywood and covered with linen, its front is elaborately hand-painted with a stylised representation of the Fenris Wolf. The design is complemented by a runic inscription in the Elder Futhark spelling the name Fenrir.
Fenrir – also known as Fenris or Fenrisúlfr – is one of the best-known creatures of Norse mythology. Together with Hel and the Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr, he is one of the children of Loki and the giantess Angrboða. As the enormous wolf grew increasingly powerful, the gods decided that he had to be restrained.
According to Norse tradition, Fenrir was eventually bound with the magical fetter Gleipnir. To convince the wolf to accept the binding, the god Tyr placed his hand in Fenrir's mouth as a pledge and lost it when the wolf realised that he could not break free. At Ragnarök, Fenrir finally escapes his bonds and devours Odin before being slain by Odin's son Vidar.
The centre of the shield features an opening for the included steel shield boss. The boss is attached using the supplied rivets and provides ample space for the hand. The reverse of the shield is painted black and fitted with a sturdy solid-wood hand grip.
Due to its comparatively light and thin construction, “FENRIR” is not intended for full-contact combat. It is, however, an impressive accessory for reenactment and LARP as well as Viking costumes, stage productions, photography, film and television. The distinctive Fenrir design also makes the shield an attractive collector's piece, display item or decorative wall shield.
