Viking Round Shield “FENRIS” with Rawhide Rim
The large Viking round shield “FENRIS” combines a powerful motif from Norse mythology with the characteristic form of a round shield. Its front features a stylised depiction of the Fenris Wolf, also known as Fenrir, Fenris or Fenrisúlfr. The design is complemented by a runic inscription from the Elder Futhark spelling his name.
The Fenris Wolf is one of the best-known figures of Norse mythology. He is a child of Loki and the giantess Angrboða and is closely associated with Hel and the Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr. Because of his immense strength and the danger he represents, the gods attempt to bind the enormous wolf permanently.
According to Norse tradition, the gods eventually succeed in binding Fenrir. Tyr places his hand in the wolf's mouth as a pledge and loses it when Fenrir realises that he cannot escape. At Ragnarök, the wolf finally breaks free and devours Odin before being slain by Odin's son Vidar.
The round shield is constructed from plywood approximately 13 mm thick. At its centre is a generously sized steel shield boss, secured with four rivets and providing ample room for the hand.
The outer edge is covered with rawhide. Three riveted wooden reinforcement battens are fitted to the reverse for additional stability. The central batten also serves as the hand grip and is wrapped in leather around the shield opening for a more comfortable hold.
Due to its comparatively thin construction, “FENRIS” is not intended for full-contact combat. It is well suited to reenactment, LARP and Norse-inspired costumes as well as stage productions, photography, film and television. The distinctive Fenris Wolf design also makes it an attractive collector's piece, display shield or decorative item.
