Viking Round Shield “HUGINN & MUNINN” with Raven Motif and Triquetras
The Viking round shield “HUGINN & MUNINN” is an elaborately decorated wooden shield whose design draws inspiration from Norse mythology and historical ornamentation. Its linen-covered front features a pair of ravens combined with several triquetras – distinctive three-part knot designs.
The two ravens represent Huginn and Muninn, the famous companions and messengers of Odin. In Norse mythology, they fly across the world before returning to Odin to tell him what they have seen and heard. This makes the raven motif particularly closely associated with the Norse god.
The design is complemented by triquetras, also known as trinity or triangular knots. Together, the ravens and interwoven ornaments give the shield its distinctive Norse-inspired character.
The round shield is made from plywood and features a linen-covered front. A steel shield boss is mounted at the centre and provides ample space for the hand. The reverse is painted black and fitted with a sturdy solid-wood hand grip.
The steel shield boss included with the shield is supplied separately and can be attached using the included rivets.
Due to its comparatively light and thin construction, “HUGINN & MUNINN” is not intended for full-contact combat. It is, however, an excellent accessory for reenactment and LARP as well as Norse-inspired costumes, stage productions, photography, film and television. The elaborate raven design also makes it an attractive collector's piece, display item or decorative wall shield.
