The Valsgärde Viking helmet “SIGVARD” is a richly detailed reproduction inspired by the spectacular helmet finds from the boat graves of Valsgärde near Uppsala in Sweden. Its characteristic construction, with a rounded helmet bowl, distinctive nasal guard, decorative reinforcing elements and an eye-catching mail aventail, evokes the appearance of a high-ranking warrior of the Vendel and early Viking periods.
Particularly striking are the elaborately decorated helmet bands and ornamental elements. Interlaced animal and knotwork motifs in a Nordic style define the appearance of the helmet. The bronze- and brass-coloured details contrast effectively with the dark helmet bowl and blackened mail, giving “SIGVARD” its prestigious character.
Valsgärde is located near Uppsala in Sweden and is one of the important archaeological sites of the Nordic Iron Age. Around 80 graves have been discovered at the burial ground, with a period of use extending approximately from the 5th to the 11th century. Valsgärde is particularly well known for its richly furnished boat graves from the Vendel and Viking periods.
The early boat graves at Valsgärde contained exceptionally elaborate helmets. Some historical finds were decorated with bronze, gold and garnet inlays and rank among the impressive surviving objects from early medieval Scandinavia. The finds also demonstrate cultural connections between Scandinavia and the Anglo-Saxon world. Due to notable parallels, Valsgärde is frequently discussed in connection with the famous Sutton Hoo ship burial in England.
“SIGVARD” incorporates the characteristic visual language of these remarkable Nordic helmets. The richly decorated nasal guard, surrounding ornamental bands and mail protecting the cheeks, ears and neck make this helmet an impressive piece for portrayals of the Vendel and Viking periods.
The aventail is made from blackened steel rings and complements the dark appearance of the helmet bowl. The interior is equipped with a leather liner, while a leather chin strap helps to keep the helmet securely in place when worn.
