Viking Axe “ROMMUNDS” – Bearded Axe Based on a Gotland Find
The Viking axe “ROMMUNDS” is a high-quality reconstruction of an early medieval bearded axe based on an archaeological find from Rommunds near Gammelgarn on the Swedish island of Gotland. The original iron artefact dates to approximately AD 800–1099 and therefore belongs to the Viking Age.
The reconstruction preserves the characteristic shape and original dimensions of the historical axe head. This gives the model a direct connection to a specific archaeological find rather than merely taking general inspiration from Viking Age axes.
Hand-Forged Carbon Steel Axe Head
The head of “ROMMUNDS” is hand-forged from carbon steel. Its distinctive outline is complemented by plant-shaped decorative elements that are likewise based on the historical original.
The cutting edge is unsharpened. The original artefact may possibly have served both as a battle axe and as a working axe, although its precise historical purpose cannot be determined with certainty.
Based on an Original from Rommunds, Gotland
The historical model for this reconstruction was discovered at Rommunds in Gammelgarn on Gotland, Sweden. The early medieval original is held by the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm, the Statens historiska museum, also known as the Historiska museet.
The dimensions of the reconstructed axe head correspond to those of the archaeological original, giving “ROMMUNDS” a particularly close connection to the historical find.
Natural Ash Wood Haft
The axe is fitted with a haft made from natural ash wood. Its understated wooden surface provides an appropriate contrast to the hand-forged and decorated axe head.
As wood is a natural material, its colour, grain and surface structure may vary from piece to piece. These variations are natural characteristics of the material.
Collector's Piece and Historical Prop
“ROMMUNDS” is designed as a collector's piece and decorative object. Thanks to its close connection to a specific Viking Age find, it is also highly suitable as a prop or accessory for Viking and early medieval portrayals, reenactment, LARP, photography, theatre or film.
The edge is unsharpened and no reenactment combat classification is specified for this model. It is therefore not intended for reenactment combat or hard impact use.
