Petersen Type L Viking Sword with Sheath – 10th Century
This sword is an interpretation of the Viking swords that were widespread in England during the 10th century. Its characteristic design is based on Petersen Type L and combines a classic early medieval blade shape with the distinctive pommel associated with this sword type.
The reconstruction offered here features a straight, double-edged blade made of hardened EN45 spring steel. A wide fuller runs along the blade and emphasises the characteristic appearance of Viking Age swords. The cutting edges are unsharpened.
The hilt consists of a short, slightly downward-curved steel crossguard, a wooden grip wrapped in leather and a substantial pommel corresponding to Petersen Type L. As with many surviving historical examples from this period, the pommel features a two-piece construction. The full blade tang is riveted to the lower section, while the two pommel sections are additionally secured together by two pins.
This early medieval one-handed sword comes complete with a matching wooden sheath covered with genuine leather. Together with the characteristic hilt and broad blade, the sheath completes the historical appearance of the sword and makes it an attractive addition to a Viking or early medieval portrayal.
This Viking sword is not suitable for stage combat or practical sword fighting. It is designed as a collector's piece and decorative object and is also an excellent prop for completing a Viking or medieval costume, as well as for reenactment, LARP, stage, film and television productions.
