Petersen Type R Viking Sword in C60 Carbon Steel – 10th Century
This Petersen Type R Viking sword is inspired by a characteristic sword form of the 10th century. Particularly striking features include the distinctive five-lobed pommel, the curved crossguard and the elaborately decorated fittings with Norse-inspired ornaments.
During the Viking Age, swords were far more than mere weapons. They were symbols of status and expressions of wealth, prestige and social standing. Elaborately decorated sword hilts in particular are associated with high-ranking individuals and prestigious burials.
The classification of Viking swords into different types goes back to Norwegian archaeologist Jan Petersen, whose fundamental typology of Viking swords was published in 1919. Petersen Type R is particularly characterised by its distinctive five-lobed pommel and richly decorated hilt components.
Historical examples of this type are known primarily from the 10th century and from various regions of Scandinavia. Elaborately decorated originals featuring silver wire and metal ornamentation demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Viking Age sword makers. The historical inspiration for this replica was a Petersen Type R sword from Stockholm, Sweden, whose richly decorated hilt impressively reflects the artistic design of Viking Age swords.
The blade of this replica is made of C60 carbon steel. The wooden grip features decorative metal applications that complement the characteristic appearance of the historical sword type.
The sword comes complete with a matching blue sheath featuring a wooden core covered with genuine leather. It complements the elaborate appearance of the sword and makes it particularly suitable for historical display.
