Viking Bearded Axe “SIGURD” – Sharp 1055 Carbon Steel Axe
The Viking bearded axe “SIGURD” is a historically inspired interpretation of the distinctive Norse bearded axe. Its design resulted from a collaboration between Cold Steel® president Lynn C. Thompson and custom bladesmiths Dave Baker and Rich McDonald.
The result is a lightweight yet imposing axe combining a sturdy hickory haft with an exceptionally broad cutting edge, pronounced beard and characteristically sweeping upper blade point.
Broad Axe Head with Pronounced Beard
The axe head is made from 1055 carbon steel and features an extra-wide, sharp cutting edge. Its extended lower beard is designed for hooking and also creates the unmistakable silhouette associated with this style of axe.
The upper section of the axe head terminates in a sweeping point. According to the original design concept, this point can also be employed for thrusting movements. Combined with the broad cutting edge and pronounced beard, these features create an interpretation deliberately designed as a fighting axe and an impressive addition to a Viking collection.
American Hickory Haft
The axe head is mounted on a sturdy haft made from straight-grained American hickory. The combination of natural hickory and carbon steel gives the axe a straightforward, functional appearance that places the distinctive shape of the head at the centre of the design.
Design and Manufacturer
The design was developed through a collaboration between Lynn C. Thompson and custom bladesmiths Dave Baker and Rich McDonald. The model is manufactured or offered by Cold Steel®.

Care Instructions
The 1055 carbon steel used for the axe head is not stainless. Protect it from moisture, clean and thoroughly dry it after use, and regularly apply a thin coat of suitable weapon or maintenance oil to help prevent corrosion.
The hickory haft should also be stored in a dry environment and regularly inspected for damage, cracks or looseness around the axe head.
