Viking Apron Dress Hilja
Apron dresses were a key element of Viking women’s clothing. Characterized by their straps and simple tubular construction, this garment form is documented by finds from Haithabu and depictions from Birka.
The Viking apron dress – also known as hangerock or smokkr – served both practical and decorative purposes. While simple versions functioned as protective overdresses, decorated examples were enhanced with embroidery, trims, chains and oval brooches.
The Hilja dress is made from durable cotton canvas (100% cotton) and features a loose fit with side slits for ease of movement. The contrasting color accents in blue/mustard highlight hem, straps and neckline.
The chest embroidery is executed in the Jelling style and depicts two intertwined dragons or serpentine creatures. This 10th-century motif is known from the silver cup of King Gorm of Denmark. Decorative “witch stitch” seams along hem and neckline reflect early medieval stitching techniques commonly used on garment edges.
For an authentic Norse look, combine with an underdress, oval brooches, a narrow leather belt and suitable accessories.
