Viking Sword “GODFRED JUTLAND” – Early Viking Sword Associated with King Godfred
The Viking sword “GODFRED JUTLAND” is a reconstruction of an early Viking sword whose historical model is described as having belonged to the Danish King Godfred. Also known as Gudfred or Gudrød, Godfred lived until his death in AD 810 and is closely associated with Hedeby near present-day Schleswig, one of the most important Viking settlements in Jutland.
The historical model dates to the 8th century and displays characteristic features of an early medieval Nordic one-handed sword: a short guard curving slightly forward, a straight double-edged blade with a pronounced fuller and a broad pommel featuring three distinctive ridges.
Handmade Construction
The sword is entirely handmade. The guard and three-ridged pommel are made from heat-treated malleable cast iron.
The EN45 spring steel blade features a full-length tang extending through the hilt and hand-peened at the pommel. This creates a solid traditional construction throughout the hilt assembly.
Oil-Hardened EN45 Spring Steel
The straight, double-edged blade is made from EN45 spring steel and features a pronounced fuller. According to the manufacturer, the fuller contributes to a combination of flexibility and comparatively low weight.
The blade is oil-hardened to approximately 48–50 HRC. Its cutting edges are supplied unsharpened.
Leather-Wrapped Grip and Distinctive Pommel
The grip is wrapped with a broad leather strip. Together with the short, slightly forward-curving guard and broad three-ridged pommel, this creates the characteristic silhouette associated with early Viking swords.
The pommel also forms the termination point of the full-length blade tang, which is hand-peened in place.
Wooden and Leather Scabbard with Two Buckles
A matching wooden and leather scabbard is included. Two buckles attached to straps allow the wearer to connect the straps of a separate sword suspension system.
Regular Version
“GODFRED JUTLAND” is the regular version of this early medieval sword. Although the blade has unsharpened edges, no specific reenactment combat classification is stated for this version.
A separate reenactment version of the same sword also exists with a blunt blade and rounded tip. The unsharpened edges of this regular version should therefore not be interpreted as approval for reenactment combat or direct blade contact.

Care Instructions
The EN45 spring steel used for the blade is not stainless. Protect the blade from moisture and clean and thoroughly dry it after handling or use. Regularly applying a thin coat of suitable weapon or universal oil will help protect the steel surface against corrosion. Store the sword in dry conditions and care for the scabbard regularly as well.
