Viking Bearded Axe Set “OTHALA” – Axe and Knife in Decorative Collector's Box
The Viking bearded axe set “OTHALA” by Windlass is an elaborate ensemble featuring numerous Nordic-inspired details. At its heart is a substantial bearded axe whose shape recalls historical Viking Age axes. It is accompanied by a small hand-forged skinning knife and a decorative wooden box for storage and display.
Bearded Axe with Othala Rune
The narrow axe head is inspired by the characteristic bearded axes of the Viking Age, examples of which have been found throughout Norway. The head is made from 1075 carbon steel. At approximately 915 g, the axe remains relatively manageable despite its substantial appearance.
The defining feature of this model is the Othala rune from the Elder Futhark engraved into the haft. Traditionally associated with heritage, homeland and ancestral land, it reinforces the axe's distinctive Nordic character.
Hickory Haft with Leather Wrapping
The approx. 57.5 cm long haft is made from American hickory and finished with a dark brown stain. A groove runs along almost its entire length and is accented at either end with brass nails.
The grip area is wrapped in leather with an intentionally aged finish, giving the axe a rugged, well-used appearance. A leather blade cover for the axe is included.
Hand-Forged Miniature Skinning Knife
The set also contains a small carbon steel skinning knife. Its roughly forged surface and hand-shaped ring handle give it a particularly rustic character. The ring handle ends in an ornamental curled form.
A leather sheath is also supplied for the knife. Its long leather strap allows it to be carried around the neck, at the waist or over the shoulder.
Decorative Wooden Box with Nordic Motifs
The axe and knife are supplied in a decorative wooden box engraved with knotwork and Nordic dragon motifs. Inside, the bottom is lined with black velvet, while two leather straps secure the axe in position.
Antiqued brass hinges and clasps complement the historical appearance. The box measures approximately 67.5 × 19.5 × 6.5 cm, making the complete set particularly attractive for collectors and display.
